Bushrangers Resources

BUSH RANGERS EXPERT GROUP

LEARNING INTENTION:

We are learning about people that shaped Australia and the impact that bush rangers had on Australian History.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:

We will be successful if:

  • We form an opinion about whether the bushrangers were heroes or villains.
  • We understand the two distinct periods of bushranging.
  • We find out about the government and public attitudes to bushrangers.
  • We find out what aspects of colonial society helped cause the rise in bushranging.
  • We select one bushranger to investigate in detail and take on their personality to develop a presentation with our choice of format.
  • We collect, analyse and organise information form various sources and cite them using a bibliography.

There were two periods of history when bushranging occurred.

  • the first Australian bushrangers were the runaway convicts (from 1789 to the early 1830s)
  • when the gold rushes began a different bushranger emerged (from the 1850s to about the 1880s)

SELECT ONE BUSH RANGER FROM EITHER THE FIRST OR THE SECOND PERIOD TO INVESTIGATE IN DETAIL.

THE BUSH RANGERS YOU MAY SELECT FROM ARE LISTED BELOW:

The early period –

  • John ‘Black’ Caesar
  • John Donahue
  • Matthew Brady

and from the second period

  • Martin Cash
  • Fred Ward (Captain Thunderbolt)
  • Frank Gardiner
  • Ben Hall
  • Andrew Scott (Captain Moonlite)
  • Harry Power
  • Dan Morgan
